Q&A

What does it do that nobody else does?  What's so special about it?
Simple: realtime effects and mixing of uncompressed HD streams, and that includes 10-bit 1080.  No proprietary software either: it's all done in Adobe Premiere Pro.  So people (usually film and high-end compositing folks) who work with 10-bit uncompressed HD video and have to do a lot of keying, color matching, etc., would save a lot of time (and money).  Another nicety is the ability to work with a 10-bit color space in After Effects and Digital Fusion and be able to output it natively, to a 10-bit HD recording device with a dual link HD-SDI interface, such as Sony SR and Panasonic D5 series VTRs.

Axio HD also, unlike Axio LE, does a lot of mixing in hardware, rather than in GPU or host CPU, and it helps with acceleration of realtime FX, especially mixing-n-matching of streams with varying codecs.  E.g. if you have an HDV stream you need to mix with a sequence of 1080 TGAs, Axio HD will do it smoother and faster.

What's the cost?
We can't say here, our agreement with Matrox won't let us.  Call or email us, and sure, we'll spill the beans.  Here, let's just say it's over ten large but less than fifteen.  Matrox will likely get mad at us for saying even that.

Can I buy Axio HD by itself, without a system?
No.  As a certified Axio HD integrator, we are only allowed to sell Axio HD as a configured turnkey system.  Which does make sense: there are fairly strict requirements (yes, stricter than with Axio LE) for temperature and airflow conditions, which, if not followed thoroughly, will cause problems.

What would a complete Axio HD system cost from DV411?
SD configurations start at $20K, HD - at $30K, as they need a faster system and a much faster array.  You ask, what's a "really fast system"?  For 2007, it's a dual-quad Xeon workstation (dual Intel Xeon processors, each with 4 "cores", or "quad-core") with 2 to 4 GB of RAM and one of the latest high-end graphics cards with at least 512MB of its own RAM.  Such systems run from $5 to $9K.
The disk array for Axio HD must be capable of reading at least two 10-bit HD streams in real time.  Usually, these will need to have a stand-alone chassis with an independent (and fast) RAID controller, 4Gbit Fibre-Channel interface, at least 12 drives in a RAID0 or RAID3 configuration.  Depending on capacity, these mammoths run $10K and up.
On top of it, you will also need a decent studio reference monitor with HD-SDI inputs that can natively display 1080 HD signal.  One such monitor is JVC DT-V24L1DU, and it costs over $4K.

To that, add DV411's integration and support, a 3-year support agreement with Matrox (you will need it), audio monitors, cables, accessories and what not, and you will see how a system can easily cost $30K and more.

Call or email us for a quote if you are one of those "film or high-end compositing folks", you won't be disappointed.  Jay Leno, Access Hollywood, Intel Corp. and US Navy, among others, use our systems and they swear by their stability and DV411's uncompromising support.
